The Japanese Konjac Sponge has joined our arsenal of hand-picked super amazing products we offer at all Shobha salons.
First, what is Konjac?
Konjac is a rootlike plant that originated in the Indochinese region & was historically introduced to Japanese by the Chinese. Since then the Japanese have been using it for over 1,500 years as a healthy ingredient in their diet. Read more about the great minerals found in Konjac here.
Ok, so you can eat it but how do they make a sponge out of a plant?
The Konjac is crushed it into a powder which when water is added to it becomes paste-like. Said paste is then mixed with calcium hydroxide to make it alkaline. Heat is then added to make it solid. The solid mixture is then frozen overnight. Through a slow drying process the water & alkaline evaporate & your sponge is born!
How do you use it?
At first glance the Japanese Konjac Sponge is small & looks rock hard & just very unsponge-like completely. The reason is because it needs to be prepped before use by following these easy steps:
Step 1: rinse & soak the dry sponge with warm water until fully softened & expanded.
Step 2: gently massage your face with the sponge starting from the center of your face & extend outwards in an upward direction. You can use the sponge with just water or add your favorite facial cleanser.
Step 3: after use, rinse the sponge with clean water & squeeze out any excess without twisting it. Be gentle with it so you don’t put any tears in it.
Step 4: hang the sponge in a well-ventilated area to dry it or keep the sponge in a container & store in the fridge. Use your sponge up to 4 weeks & then replace.
P.S.: they’re only $13 at all Shobha salons & there’s one for each skin type!
