what's different about laser at Shobha?

like the rest of our signature methods, we abide by strict standards to ensure your safety, comfort & the best results possible for each client. all of our laser specialists have gone through extensive training & we use the top-of-the line lasers - which means you'll get the most effective results out of the least amount of visits!

how long do the appointments last?

this varies per area of the body. expect your first visit to be 15 minutes longer due to your consultation, regular appointments will range in time from 15 - 60 minutes per body part. for example, the treatment time for smaller areas like underarms is 15 minutes, while full leg is approximately 60 minutes.

how often do I need to come in?

we recommend treatments every 5-6 weeks. it is important to allow the natural growth cycle to occur, so please do not wax/sugar/thread.

  • face treatments: 4-5 weeks
  • underarms: 4-5 weeks
  • mid body (bikini, chest, back, arms): 5-6 weeks
  • lower body (legs, feet, toes): 7-10 weeks

when will i start seeing results?

after your first treatment you will notice the hairs start to fall out over the next 5-30 days. this will happen gradually. after the first 48 hours we recommend exfoliating to help along the process, using a washcloth or Shobha® Exfoliating Cloth on the area when bathing & shaving.

what do i need to do before my appointment?

  1. shave the area within the 24 hours before your appointment.
    • the closer the shave the better. if it is your first time, leave a small patch of hair so that your specialist can exam it. (she’ll shave it down before beginning the treatment!)
    • for bikini services, don’t shave the part where you want to keep the hair.
  2. skip the makeup/lotion/deodorant the day of your appointment (in the area where you are receiving a treatment).
  3. stay out of direct sunlight for at least 3 days prior to your appointment (& 3 days after).
  4. not use self-tanner or spray tan products for at least 2 weeks before your treatment to avoid potential injury.
  5. avoid drinking more than 2 alcoholic beverages 24 hours before your treatment (be sure to factor that in if you have party plans!).
  6. avoid waxing/sugaring/threading/tweezing in the area for at least 4 weeks. shaving is ok!
  7. upon arrival, complete your laser form as honestly as possible (don't be shy!).
    • we ask that you disclose personal information regarding your medical history & background, which will be reviewed during your consultation.
    • the information you provide is important to customize the laser settings for the safest & most effective results for you!
    • if you are under the care of physician, you may be asked to provide a doctor’s note (so be proactive & ask your doc ahead of time!).
important notes: (1) laser services cannot be performed on ladies who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive. (2) bikini laser services will not be performed on menstruating clients in accordance with our Shobha No PeriodSM Policy.

what happens during my appointment?

the prep:

  • your first visit will include a 15 minute consultation to ensure we have all of the details about your skin & personal history to customize the laser settings for the most effective results for your skin & hair type.
  • if the hair is not shaved short, close to the skin, we will take care of that for you.
  • we will wipe down the area to your bare skin, removing any makeup, lotion &/or deodorant.
  • you will be provided with goggles to wear during the treatment for your safety.

will it hurt?

since everyone's physical threshold for pain varies, the level of pain will vary as well. also, the denser your hair grows, the more sensation you’ll feel (which luckily will reduce treatment to treatment as there will be fewer hairs!). most folks find it to be minimally painful, describing the pain as quick little zaps, like a tiny rubber band smacking against the skin.

is there anything i can do to reduce the pain?

topical numbing creams with lidocaine can be used to help dull the pain. however the pain is minimal & only one zap at a time, it's over before you know it! most folks find they can endure the service without using or taking anything prior.

what do i do after my appointment?

  1. redness & bumps are normal.
immediately after your treatment, redness & bumps at the treatment area are common; these may last up to 2 hours or longer. it is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours. you should use a cold compress if the sensitivity continues. if there is any crusting, apply an antibiotic cream. darker pigmented skin may have more discomfort than lighter skin & may persist longer.
  2. cleanse gently.
the treated area may be washed gently with a mild soap. skin should be patted dry & not rubbed during the first 48 hours.
  3. skip the makeup & lotion/moisturizer/deordorant for the first 24 hours.
keep the area clean & dry, if further redness or irritation persists, skip your makeup & moisturizer, & deordorant (for underarms) until the irritation has subsided.
  4. dead hairs will begin to shed 5-30 days after your treatment.
stubbles, representing dead hair being shed from the hair follicle, will appear within 5-30 days from the treatment date. that is normal & they will fall out quickly.
  5. exfoliate to speed up hair shedding.
anywhere from 5-30 days after the treatment, shedding of the hair may occur & this may appear as new hair growth. it is not new hair growth, but the dead hair pushing its way out of the follicle. you can help the hair come out by washing with a washcloth or a Exfoliating Cloth & shaving.
  6. avoid the sun.
avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark or light spots for 2 months. use sunscreen (spf 25 or higher) at all times throughout the treatment period & for 1-2 months following.
  7. not pick/scratch/wax/sugar/thread/tweeze the area.
avoid picking or scratching the treated skin. do not use any other hair removal methods or products, other than shaving, on the treated area during the course of your laser treatments, as it will prevent you from achieving the best results.
  8. hair growth varies.
on average, most folks will experience a level of hairless happiness after 6-9 sessions which will result in not even checking for stubble (yes, it's life changing!).
  9. ask a professional.
call us here at Shobha with any questions or concerns you may have after the treatment.

what happens after my appointment?

your skin may be sensitive for the next 48 hours. apply a cold compress (simply a washcloth with cold water) if you experience any discomfort. occasionally, treatments can result in further irritation of the skin. in this case, we recommend you contact your doctor or local pharmacy if the situation persists. often they will recommend an antihistamine to help calm the reaction, as long as you have no medical reason prohibiting its use.

when will i start to see results?

your hair will begin to fall out a few days after the treatment. results vary person-to-person. typically you will see a noticeable difference after your 3rd treatment. please note, that darker complexions may take more sessions to see results as the melanin (pigment) in the skin absorbs some of the laser's strength.

why do i need to shave the area before?

it is best not to wax/sugar/thread/tweeze the area at least 4 weeks before your treatment. during this time & right before your treatment we recommend that you shave the area. it is important to shave the area that is to be lasered, so that the laser can penetrate the root of the hair at the base of the follicle. the shorter the hair the more effective the treatment will be.

what areas can be lasered? what areas can't be lasered?

most areas of the body & face can be lasered. please note that the inner butt crack (i.e., rectum) & top/bottom part of the brows cannot be lasered, however the 'unibrow' – the middles section between the brows – can be lasered.

what types of hair cannot be lasered?

  • peach-fuzz (very fine, tiny hairs)
  • grey
  • white
  • blonde (if you were born a blonde, even if your hair has darkened, the root of your hair may still be blonde causing results to be less effective)
  • light red/strawberry blonde
for these types of hair we suggest threading or sugaring for the face, waxing or sugaring for the body, as alternatives.

what can affect the results of my treatment?

medications, dietary supplements & hormonal changes can play role in the effectiveness of your treatment.

I currently thread, wax, sugar, shave, why would i want to laser?

laser is a great option if you experience rapid hair growth in areas you prefer to be hairless. after your initial set of treatments (usually 6-9), there is minimal maintenance needed. if you are prone to ingrown hairs you will find this issue is drastically reduced since the hair literally stops growing back!

who performs the laser treatments?

we have licensed Shobha® Laser Specialists who have completed extensive laser training of 100+ hours.

what type of training have they had?

our team has over 100+ hours of laser training & continue to participate in our ongoing quality assurance program, to ensure they are performing safe & effective treatments - customizing treatments for all skin/hair types.

if i laser parts of my face will i be red afterwards? will it be noticeable?

everyone's reaction is different, however there is likely to be some redness for the first 24 – 48 hours. during this time we recommend staying out of the sun & avoiding the application of makeup, creams/lotions/serums to this area while there is redness/irritation.

how old do I need to be to laser?

ladies: we recommend being 18 years old for women. if you are younger, we absolutely need you to be accompanied by their parent/legal guardian for the initial consultation & service, as well as receive written consent. since hormones levels (& hair growth) during puberty can fluctuate, we recommend waiting at least 2 years after your first period to receive laser treatments.
guys: since the hormonal fluctuations from puberty & the hair growth that comes along with this stage of life don’t level out until about 21 years of age, we recommend holding off on laser until you are at least 21 years old to ensure you get the best results (e.g., hormonal changes can cause new hairs to grow & we want to make sure we can target as many of those hairs during your treatments).

when's the best time to get lasered?

  • while you can start any time of year, we recommend starting in the fall/winter months so that you are super smooth for spring/summer! plus, this is usually when you have less exposure to the sun so you don't have to plan around beach days to get lasered (remember: you must wait 3 days after direct sun exposure to receive a laser treatment & spray-tanned/sunburned skin cannot be lasered).
  • invest in your 20s, 30s, & 40s! since laser is not effective on grey or white hair, we recommend investing younger - plus you'll get to enjoy even more years of smooth, hairless skin!

why are some hairs still growing back?

here’s a little more background info:

  • there are 3 phases of hair growth (1) anagen - the phase of active hair growth, the most ideal phase for laser, (2) catagen - the regression phase when the hair starts to weaken, (3) telogen - the phase in which the hair falls out in preparation for new hair to grow.
  • on the body there are literally about 3000 hair follicles per square inch (we know, we are even hairier than we thought!). most of those hairs are dormant & only 10-30% of the hair is in the anagen phase at a given time (including the time of your laser treatment).
  • other factors that may affect hair growth include: medications, hormonal levels/imbalances & dietary supplements/vitamins (e.g., if you take supplement for hair & nails, the supplement stimulates growth all over your body, not just your head!).

will laser help with ingrowns?

yes! since laser treatments destroy the hair from the root, you will have less hair which will reduce the likelihood of ingrowns (no hair, no ingrown hairs).

what methods of hair removal can i do between treatments?

we recommend shaving between treatments. beware that other methods that remove the hair from the root (e.g., threading, tweezing, sugaring, waxing) will reduce the effectiveness of your sessions.

what is threading?

threading is by far the gentlest form of hair removal & dates back centuries with its origins in arabia & south asia. the simple process involves a piece of thread that is twisted & pulled along areas of unwanted hair acting like a mini-lasso, lifting the hair follicle directly from the root without the use of any chemicals or unnecessary tugging on delicate skin! we believe so strongly in this method that it is the only hair removal option we offer for the delicate area around the eyes.

i noticed that the specialist put the thread in her mouth, is this sanitary?

yes, the specialist uses her mouth to hold the thread taut for better accuracy, but this part of the thread never comes in contact with your skin.

how long does threading usually last & how often should i come back?

since threading removes each hair from the root, it lasts just as long as waxing. of course, re-growth depends on how fast your hair grows, but generally our threading clients come, on average, every 2-5 weeks. another great advantage to threading is that the treatment can target even "peach-fuzz" & other short hairs (aka stubbles) that wax would not be able to get; so if you have a special event & just want a clean-up it is possible with threading!

i over-tweezed; how long should i wait before making an appointment?

we recommend waiting 3-4 weeks after your "pluck fest" to come in for an appointment. however if you find yourself reaching for the tweezers, please come in sooner! the beauty of threading is that even the shorter hairs can be removed while a Shobha Specialist can start training your shape.
please note: if you removed too many hairs, remember that not all stubbly hairs are bad - have patience & let those shorter hairs grow to their full potential before you decide the keepers from the strays.

i want to get my face threaded, but will the hair grow back darker?

no, since threading removes the hair from the root, your hair will grow back the same or less over time as the hair follicles weaken.

my skin is very sensitive, will I get red from threading?

everyone has a different level of skin sensitivity. if you find that you do have very sensitive skin, you will probably experience some redness after threading, but it usually subsides within an hour, unlike wax which can take days (since it literally removes your upper layers of delicate skin)! you may apply hydrocortisone cream &/or use ice after the treatment to help reduce redness. we apply Shobha® Rosewater Calming Gel after all threading treatments, which tightens the pores & naturally reduces irritation.

since this is my first time at Shobha, who is the best person you have for brow threading?

we highly recommend our senior (level 2) specialists, they are highly skilled & can offer the best results. please note, their rates vary from the standard Shobha Specialist rate.

is threading painful?

pain-wise, threading is comparable to tweezing. perhaps the most unique part about the process is the way the thread feels on your skin.

i am a woman, but seem to get a 5 o'clock shadow like a man, what do your recommend?

since your hair grows so fast, you would need to get threading done every few days, & so we would recommend trying laser. it takes several treatments to see semi-permanent results & may seem more costly, but it will save you a lot of time. in between these laser treatments, or after your sessions have finished, feel free to come in for threading! please choose your laser professional carefully. we recommend having your treatment performed by a dermatologist when possible. laser hair removal treatments should not be performed around the eyes.

should i get threaded before or after a facial?

in general, we recommend that you thread 24 hours before or after a facial to avoid any reaction. if you must thread on the same day, we recommend threading after your facial. however, if you have sensitive skin, please wait at least 24 hours when possible.

i have a special event coming up (i.e., wedding), when should i come in for threading?

we recommend coming in for threading 2-3 days before a special event but don't fret, it is safe to wear makeup after threading & any redness usually subsides within an hour, so even the day of is ok for last-minute beauty calls!

i just had cosmetic surgery, is it safe to thread?

since everyone is different, we recommend checking with your physician first, but yes, threading is safe to get after 3-4 weeks after the surgery, typically when your skin becomes less sensitive & has had time to heal.

i want to learn how to thread, do you offer any classes?

currently, we are not hosting public Shobha® Pro Trainings. we do accept requests, which are then evaluated on a case-by-case basis. for inquiries, please contact us via email at thoughts@myshobha.com.

what is the difference between a level 1 & level 2 specialist?

similar to the levels of hair stylists, our specialist levels are based on experience & expertise. while all of our level 1 specialists meet our service standards, our level 2 specialists have gone through additional training for brow design. our level 2 specialists are also part of our quality assurance team, in which they provide training & mentoring for level 1 specialists.

what is the difference between the women's bikini treatments offered at Shobha?

the bikini creates a neat & tidy line on the sides removing hair that might peek out of a basic bathing suit & offers you the option of adjusting your triangle on top - it does not include the lip or crack areas. the brazilian bikini includes both the lip &/or crack areas. you may choose to leave a landing strip, triangle or go completely bare based on your personal preference.

what is the difference between the men's bikini treatments offered at Shobha?

the men's full bikini option offers grooming of the top, sides & crack. it does not include the sac region. the men's brazilian includes the top, sides, shaft, sac & crack - you may choose to remove it all or leave a customized version.

can i get a brazilian with sugar?

sometimes with sugaring gel, it takes several applications to remove all of the hair from an area. the reason for the wax (which tends to be stickier) in the brazilian is simply to ensure your comfort & reduce the amount of applications needed to remove the hair, especially in this delicate region. if you would prefer the sugaring gel over the wax, please ask your specialist at the beginning of the treatment. she will then perform as much of the treatment with the sugaring gel as possible. if wax is used in any part of your treatment, it will be considered a waxing service & charged accordingly.

does sugaring hurt less than waxing?

sugaring tends to hurt less than waxing because it pulls less on the skin, while still effectively removing the hair. in addition, the weight of the denim cloth used to remove the sugaring gel helps to reduce some of the pain.

what is sugaring?

sugaring dates back to the civilization of ancient mesopotamia, egypt & greece. it is a form of hair removal that resembles waxing, but is actually much gentler on the skin & less painful to endure.

is sugaring or waxing better for my skin?

Shobha® Sugaring Gel is all-natural (made out of only sugar, water, lemon juice & glycerin ) making it the most gentle & natural option for the skin. however, if you have been shaving for a while, you may get cleaner results from waxing for your initial treatments since hairs tend to grow unevenly when shaving. then, once you have been waxing a few times, you may switch to sugaring, while still achieving the same results. if you are unsure which treatment is best for you, simply ask your Shobha Specialist at the start of your appointment.

how long should my hair be to sugar/wax?

your hair should be at least 1/4" in length, in which the hair will lay flat on the skin. if hairs are still sticking straight out, you should probably wait a few more days. also, if you are usually a "shaver" your hair should be slightly longer for the best results. please wait at least 2 weeks from your last shave before a waxing/sugaring treatment.

i'm allergic to latex; do you use latex gloves for your treatments?

we use non-latex gloves for all treatments at Shobha, so you don't have to worry or make any special requests!

how can i prevent ingrown hairs?

we recommend exfoliating daily, cleansing your skin using your Shobha® Exfoliating Cloth or exfoliating scrub.
if you have existing bumps & ingrown hairs, add a topical treatment to your routine, like Shobha® Ingrown Relief Lotion. these products should be used consistently to see the best results. over time, they can be used to prevent & treat ingrown hairs. for prevention & mild ingrowns, apply daily at night. for more severe ingrown cases, use twice daily, at night & in the morning. for the best results, apply after showering when the skin is still moist to ensure optimal absorption of the lotion by the skin.

how often should i come in to get sugared/waxed?

once a month is generally the appropriate time in between treatments. however, clients who come on a regular basis come in anywhere from 3-5 weeks, depending on how fast their hair grows. the hair should be long enough to lay flat on the skin, so if it is still poking straight out, you should wait another week.

what type of wax do you use?

we use Shobha® Liquid Wax with Azulene, which has been carefully formulated for sensitive skin. it is greenish in color & contains azulene oil. azulene oil comes from the chamomile plant & acts as a natural anti-inflammatory which helps reduce irritation & redness during the treatment process. muslin strips are used with the wax in the removal process. for men's bikini treatments, we also use a hard wax containing titanium dioxide. this wax is excellent for removing hair in the most sensitive regions.

should i trim my hair before i come for my appointment?

no, our specialists will trim any longer hairs to the proper length prior to the removal process. your hair should be at least ¼ inch in length (which makes it long enough to lay flat on your skin). if you've "let it go" & it seems out of control, don't worry, your specialist will trim it to the proper length before your treatment.

can i request a fresh can of wax/sugaring gel for my treatment?

yes, you may always request a fresh can of wax/sugaring gel for your treatment. however rest assured that we strongly uphold our No Double-Dip(SM) Policy, which ensures that we will never re-dip a spatula, so your treatment will always be performed with clean, uncontaminated wax/sugaring gel!

my specialist used a buzzer to trim my hair; is this equipment sanitary?

yes, absolutely! between each & every treatment, all equipment is sanitized with hospital-grade disinfectant.

i am going to be in the sun, when should i get waxed/sugared?

we recommend that if you plan on being in the sun you should get waxed/sugared at least 2-3 days prior & always wear proper sun protection!

i have my period, can i still get a bikini wax?

no, it is a policy here at Shobha that we will not wax any client that is currently on her period to ensure her safety as well as that of our specialists. in addition, during your period your body tends to be much more sensitive than normal, making pain from waxing feel more intense (& who would willingly welcome that?).

is it OK to have sex the same day i get my bikini wax?

medical experts recommend waiting for 24-48 hours after any type of bikini wax. this time period is when your body can be most susceptible to outside bacteria, which can potentially cause an infection. for your safety & health, it is better to abstain, but not required. it is really a personal choice, so just keep in mind that your skin does need some time to recover.

i am pregnant, is it safe to sugar/wax?

many of our pregnant clients still get bikini treatments, some physicians even recommend it before birthing. but remember, everyone's pregnancy is different so please ask your doctor first!

i have a mole, can i sugar/wax it?

moles cannot be sugared/waxed, however our specialists are trained to go around these areas.

i am getting married/have a big event coming up, when should i get my waxing done?

we recommend coming in for waxing 3-4 days before your wedding/big event.

i used to shave, but have let my hair grow & just had a Shobha® Treatment. why do i have stubble?

if you have been a frequent shaver previously (even if you have let your hair grow for a few weeks before your sugaring or waxing treatment), shaving can cause hair re-growth to be uneven, in which some hairs can be too short to be removed with wax or sugaring gel & may result in the appearance of stubble after your first treatment. ideally, all of your hairs should lay flat on your skin to achieve the best results; so some of these shorter hairs may not be removed with wax or sugaring gel the first time. please have patience & let those shorter stubbles grow (no shaving between treatments!) so that your second treatment will have even smoother results!

do i have to remove my underwear for a bikini treatment?

for a bikini, you have the option of leaving on your underwear, your underwear must be removed for a brazilian bikini. however, we recommend removing your underwear for all bikini treatments to protect your clothing from the wax or sugaring gel.
